The area immediately above Thongsala is close to the area frist settled on the island. Wat Phu Khao Noi has temple remains over 400 years old and impressive ocean views and there are numerous traditional Thai homesteads along the old plantation roads. Some of the locality's best bars and restaurants are to be found on the roads leading to Thongsala and the island's municipal centre, hospital and police headquarters are also located here.

On the main road south of Thongsala going to Baan Tai, there are several good bars and a variety of restaurants serving Maxican, French, Italian, Indian, Thai and numerous other food styles. Along the coast of Ao Bang Charu there is also a great variety of resorts, with several low budget places with great value rooms and some nice mid to high end places that also tend to be soft on the pocket.
